BOWNESS-ON-WINDERMERE
Norse Origins
Bowness-on-Windermere was originally a Norse trading and fishing settlement and likely referred to as 'Bulnys' or 'Bulness'. It was situated in a sheltered bay on Windermere's East side.
It became a popular Victorian destination due mainly to the arrival of the railway in 1847, from Oxenholme and Kendal to Windermere, establishing it as the closest accessible point on the lake. Bowness grew from a small village to a town centred on tourism, boat building - supplying sailing yachts, rowing boats and steam launches for use on Lake Windermere - and hospitlity.
Windermere's most popular Destination
Today Bowness-on-Windermere is one of the most popular destinations, a vibrant tourist town, located on the shores of Windermere in the Lake District. You can find many cottages in the Lake District with Rydal Cottage being wonderfully located, a few minutes walk from all the shops and restaurants.
Our Cottage in the Lake District is roughly halfway along the lake’s 10.5-mile stretch, between Waterhead and Lakeside.
